Nexus of Thought
4th Year Design Studio
Instructor: Jacob Alspector
This studio project—a 90,000 sq. ft. library for both the College of Fine Arts and the School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University—is conceived as both a physical and intellectual bridge between the disciplines of art and business.
The program includes a Media Nexus and a Conference Center that function independently from the main library. The site, located between the School of Business and the College of Fine Arts, was previously an open space, offering the opportunity to create a new outdoor gathering area. In response, the design introduces a roof garden with skylights above a subterranean structure. The skylights bring daylight deep into the building and informed the spatial organization: reading areas and stacks are arranged around a three-story lightwell, while program elements less reliant on natural light, such as the Media Nexus and Special Collections, are positioned where skylights would not interfere.
The roof garden is envisioned as a contemplative and inspirational space that fosters connection between users. Its minimal design, featuring carefully placed trees and asymmetrical openings, creates a welcoming atmosphere while introducing dynamic spatial qualities to the interiors below.
